From Brave

 Hello everyone -

you join us in mid-November as we’re now quite some way towards recording our next Extended Play Single (EP).
I know what you’re going to say - what, another one ? (Yes, ‘DNA’ came out as a 20-minute EP with alternative takes and non-album material back in July alongside its parent recording, the album ‘Bloodlines’).

This one is going to be different and far more important. Please read on.

As you know, we play many pubs and clubs in Leicester in order to raise money for various local charities. The last couple of Christmases we were asked to play the ‘Shakespeare’s Head’. The management there chose the RAINBOWS CHILDRENS’ HOSPICE as their charity of choice, and we’ll be supporting them again when we return there on Sat 20th December for our special Christmas gig.

For those who are unfamilar with RAINBOWS, they provide practical and emotional support to families and children in the event of those children suffering terminal illness. It’s an amazingly difficult thing they do, and they do it amazingly well.

So, since many of you have asked us to record the versions of traditional Christmas carols, we play live, we’ve decided to put these on the new single ‘To Bring You Home’ and sell the EP at £3, with ALL the money going to Rainbows.

The tracks are already sounding great, with all the usual suspects involved from the ‘Bloodlines’ sessions. This is Christmas music, but definitely has the Brave sound all over it !

We hope the single will be ready for the first week of December, so if you want to support a worthy cause , then please help us by pre-ordering the single. We hope to sell it in various Leicester retail outlets, but since it’s a great stocking filler for your friends and family, you might want to order a few - e-mail us and let us know in the next few days, please, so we can manufacture the right amount.

Running Order will be:

To Bring You Home
Hark the Herald Angels Sing
O Holy Night
Silent Night

Thanks for taking the time to read this e-mail. look forward to seeing you at a gig soon, and e-mail those orders in !

God Bless -

PG and the boys from BRAVE.

Warlock (an article from Brian Rushin)

July 29th, 2008

It is the night of March 8th 2008 and a packed room at The Shakespeare’s Head in Southgate Street were looking forward to a night of real rock and roll from Leicester’s longest running rock and roll band; WARLOCK.

WHAT A NIGHT IT WAS!!!!!!

The article in The Leicester Chronicle issue dated December 2007 which detailed Warlock supporting Little Richard at The George Hotel in Hinckley, has certainly brought back memories for quite a lot of people. Some of whom were in attendance on this memorable night. I also have had strangers, to me that is, coming up to me in the street and saying, “Hello Brian,” of course, maybe they have read my book; ‘Memories of a Leicester drummer.’ One day a lady I have known for some time said, “I didn’t know you were a drummer.”

Tonight someone called the audience; ‘Friends United’ which I thought was a very good description of the fans that were there. Included were Diana Sanders who besides being a fan of Warlock also co-ran the Warlock fan club with her sister. Veronica Smith who co-ran the Little Richard Fan Club, Veronica’s friend Wendy, Linda and Brian Cox, who are recent Warlock fans, Mike and Sue Pruden. Mike is a guitarist who has played with Warlock sometimes, Mick Winn, the bass player when I was the drummer and Geoff Overon accompanied by Tom Lane who sometimes plays drums for Warlock

Coincidentally, in the December Chronicle article on the right hand side of the same page there is an article about The Shakespeare’s Head. It’s a small world! Isn’t it?

This is Ken and Veronica looking at some Richard Penniman (Little Richard) fan club issues.

This is the present line-up of Warlock. Ken Spencer, Andy McDonald and Mick Wilkes.

When I arrived, Warlock were nearly set-up so I looked around the room to see who I knew. Sitting at the bar was a gentleman who was very familiar but I was unable to remember where

we had met before. I asked him who and where we’d met and he said, “I remember you but I don’t know where from.” When I told him I used to be the drummer for Warlock, he then remembered seeing the band in Market Harborough. Other people spoke to me; some of the ladies even kissed me!

Ken Spencer and Mick Wilkes were the founder members of The Warlocks in the 1950’s.

These photographs are of The Warlocks in their original stage outfits (and age)and today.

Warlock 70/80`sWarlock reunited for one song

As you can see in the second photograph, Mick Winn and myself were asked, (even urged) by some of the audience if we were going to join Ken for a number.

It was rather nice to be remembered by these people so I asked Ken if he would allow Mick and me to join in with the entertainment for just one song. He agreed readily and, even, rather excitedly and suggested that we play ‘Rockabilly Rebel’.

Mick suggested that we start the last session of Warlock’s programme, but I said, “If we do, we might be asked to do more that the one we had agreed.” So it was agreed that we play the last song of the second set.

When it came time for the last song of the second session, Ken announced that Mick and I were in the audience and would we join him to play with the band.

With some trepidation, I settled behind Andy’s drum kit, picked up the sticks and Mick picked up Mick Wilkes Bass guitar. Ken started and, as if I had not stopped playing drums since the 1980’s, except for a couple of times when Ken asked me to go with them to their bookings, I joined in and felt that 20 years had dropped off my life. I couldn’t see the audience although I had my eyes open, I was concentrating so much.

After I came off the drums I was approached by Veronica Smith who said, “You’ve not lost it, Brian.” Later, other people said similar things to me and Mick Winn.

I would like publicly to thank Andy McDonald for allowing me to play his drums and Mick Wilkes for allowing Mick Winn to play his guitar.

Towards the end of Warlock’s programme, a lady joined in. Wow! What a singer! I felt my neck hairs rising. Could this lady swing! Her name is Linda Cox and I found out later that she and her husband Brian attend Ken’s ‘Born To Boogie’ nights at the Crow’s Nest pub. These are run by Ken and his long-time friend Tiger John McWhirter and if you like real music I suggest you attend at least once. It is on every Wednesday night and, if you can play or sing, you might even be able to join in.

Catching up a little bit

April 19th, 2008

Sorry - not had access to computer as easily as required lately !

Got so many people to thank I’m going to have to miss most out - but - hey - you know who you are.

Will mention a couple of out of town visitors we have had down - Amy Wyke from Kettering and Karen Killeen from Coventry - both most welcome indeed!  I’ll be getting them a couple of gigs locally and will keep people posted by me my space blog - myspace.com/bobdilling

Thanks over the last few weeks then to ….. Kev (and Dave!), Christmas Tree John, John Seals, Jez Ryder, Gax Marsh, Tom Harding, Guitar John, Nick the Singing Barman, The Moorsiders, Sam, Cherry and the Orchestra, Riley, Christopher Tedd, Liam and The Snail Club, and a big thanks to J J Manning.

Don’t all turn up at once for heavens sake! But see you soon!

Open Mike Night 12th March

March 13th, 2008

Well - it just keeps getting better and better!

First of all thanks to The Moorsiders  for doing an opening set for us.  Coming together nicely and you got the gig!

Thanks to Christopher Tedd for doing the sound again and for his set ( sorry you only got three!) even though you didn’t do my favourite - the one where the grass is always greener.

Steve Parker managed to escape for the evening and entertained in his unique laconic way.  Love your songs, Steve, and enjoyed the singaround with you too.

Another John - ‘just’ John, made his Shakey and microphone debut and acquitted himself really well, even though the nerves were showing a little bit! It’s quite daunting ain’t it mate! Well done and thanks.  Expecting more from you in the future you know!

Tom Harding gig was double booked - bad news for him but good for us as he came to the Shakey instead.  Again sorry only time for three Tom (but a very nice three they were too! Anya liked ‘Crazy’ especially ‘cos I saw her singing along!)

Kev came even though he’d not been well - you couldn’t have told it though. Thanks once more.  Christmas Tree John continues to expand his repertoire, I’m pleased to say, with his unique method of playing stuff instrumentally for the first few outings and adding lyrics later! It works though!

Cherry bought the raw materials of her new band down to flex their musical muscles.  Really REALLY great! We only had Fiona’s cello on one number but what a difference it makes.  Christina on eggs (!) and Sam giving us a problem now - when we talk about a ‘box’ I’ve been used to that meaning a guitar - now - well Sam’s box is … lets face it… a box!  Gives the songs that extra feel and rythym though - you kept the tempo constant as well which is not necessarily easy.

Guitar John was able to join us for the first time in a while in the singaround and Sam played his other box as well.

Nick, the singing barman, got on this week.  Highly entertaining as usual and didn’t break a string! Thanks, Nick.

We wound it up just after two o’clock as people ‘didn’t want to stay too late’! Cor Blimey! It’s killing me! Loving it though and looking forward to next week.

Open Mike Night 5th March

March 6th, 2008

We keep having one good night after another.  Lots of people to thank again.

First of all there was JJ - only the one guitar and standing up! Loved the blues stuff you did - first time for me that I’ve heard you feature the blues in your set.

Nice to see James and Mop again with their refreshing ‘just do it’ attitude to covers which are quite difficult to carry off with just 6 strings and vocal - don’t know many that could tackle the numbers they do successfully.  Thanks boys.

Thanks to Adam Gardner for bravely saying ‘f**k it’ to academic success and coming down for a play and a few beers - quite right too! Alex joined him later sans laptop - your songs stand up well without it mate, don’t worry!

First timer Lawrence did one excellent number down the mike and joined in with the rest of his gang ( whose names I will take a week or two to remember!) in the after midnight sing around. Enjoyed your company lads and your music.

Another first timer was Ken - The Shakeys answer to Larry Adler - thanks Ken.

Christmas Tree John and Kev made their regular contribution - what would Wednesdays be without them! Always love ‘that Harvey Andrews One’ and well done to John for remembering all the words to ‘The Sick Note’!

Gaz Marsh came down - on the shandy but still there at the death! Thanks for ’Angel of Montgomery’ !

Finally thanks to Jez Ryder - wish he wouldn’t borrow my guitar - he’s really playing himself back into form but plays my old cheesegrater so well I lose my best excuse for fluffing things !

Poor old Nick didn’t get a look in this week - I’m sure he’ll tell me that you can have too much of a good thing!

Looking forward to next time again!

Open Mike Night 27th Feb

March 3rd, 2008

Thanks everyone for another good night.

The Moorsiders opened things up for us with some covers I was glad to be reminded of and some of Rigsby’s originals too - nice. Apologies to Andy for roping him in at short notice on a number he’s never heard before (’cos it was a new one of mine!) - didn’t phase him though!

‘Formal Warning’ were great - thanks for hanging around to some more later on lads.  Sorry about your sound man! (Me)

Stalwarts Chrsitmas Tree John and Kev took the floor with Kevin on Mandolin too - another ‘first timer’ at The Shakey.  Thanks lads ( Even though Kev couldn’t think what to do again)

Sam bought a little bit of sanity to the proceedings for us - he’s the ’seasoned pro’ now - nicely delivered mate - original stuff as well which is always more difficult to communicate.

Nick, the singing barman, did some late on - he insists he hasn’t been practising but I’m not sure I believe him.  If you’re that good without practice, imagine how good you could be if you got of your a**e and did some then!!

Open Mike Night 20th Feb

February 22nd, 2008

On a night when town was ‘dead’ according to Dave, the relief manager, we were rocking!

Andy, Connor and Rigsby, collectively know as The Moorsiders, made a welcome first visit -  hoping to get them back to do a longer set at some point. Thanks lads.

Adam Gardner was another first timer - excellent stuff Adam, thanks for your support.  Alex sang for the first time at the ‘Shakey’ as well - he’s pretty good so don’t believe his own publicity!

Thanks to Kev ( ever faithful ) and Christmas Tree John ( who is getting better every week!).  I even got to do a few and we got Nick, the singing barman behind the microphone this week - the practice is paying off - nice one Nick.

Don’t know what time it all finished - I left them to it at about half one - but I’m an old man!

Check out the myspaces  /bobdilling and /shakespearesheadcouk - links to Adam on mine via ‘friends’.

Open Mike 13th Feb

February 18th, 2008

Sorry for the late start ( though maybe I should be apologising for the late finish! I know it wears a few of us out but we’re too weak willed to go home!)  A big thanks to all who came - listeners and performers. We had a great night - So many singers I think Kev only did 3 songs all night!

Thanks to Liam and Gary (AKA The Snail Club)  who did a couple of mini sets for us - they had to leave early sadly - would have been nice to have had them for the singaround.

Thanks once more to J J Manning - the only man in the world who would bring 3 guitars for what is effectively a floor spot! Thanks for inviting me in on Early Morning Rain too.

Christmas Tree John did some, Jez Ryder did also and a first timer for the Shakey was the one and only Kenny Wilson - what a line up!  I even managed to get in a few myself.

Heres looking forward to next week.
